Robotics Student Awarded Amazon Robotics Day One Fellowship

Oscar De La Garza, MS’25, robotics, is participating in an internship at Amazon Robotics as part of being named one of just seven students awarded the 2023 Amazon Robotics Day One Fellowship. The fellowship supports emerging leaders in science from backgrounds underrepresented in STEM, awarding scholarships, mentorship, and career opportunities.

Developing the World’s First Sub-THz Satellite Network Platform

ECE Professor and Interim Chair Josep Jornet, MIE Professor Andrew Gouldstone, ECE Professor Kaushik Chowdhury, ECE William Lincoln Smith Professor Tommaso Melodia, and ECE/COS Professor Ken Duffy, in collaboration with the Morehead State University Space Science Center, were awarded a $750,000 NSF grant for the “Development Towards a Community Research Platform for Sub-THz Satellite Communication Networks.”

Using AI To Save Lives on the Battlefield

Liam McEneaney, MS’25, engineering and public policy, is working with ECE Associate Professor Sarah Ostadabbas and MIE Teaching Professor Beverly Kris Jaeger-Helton, and in collaboration with MIT Lincoln Lab, to develop an AI-powered computer program that will accurately and quickly fill out tactical combat casualty care cards for injured soldiers on its own on the battlefield by processing video and audio from medics in real time, and quickly sending the digital card to hospital staff.

Northeastern Recognizes Women Innovators

Kaitlin McCarthy, E’09, civil engineering, won first place in the Experienced Alumnae category in the 2024 Women Who Empower Innovator Awards from Northeastern University, while Mukki Gill, E’25, mechanical engineering and history, placed second for the Powering a Healthy Tomorrow Award and received an honorable mention in the undergraduate category. Additionally, Nicole Guadagno, E’25, mechanical engineering, received an honorable mention for her work on Remetra in the undergraduate category, and Fatema Janahi, E’22, computer engineering, and MS’22, engineering management, received an honorable mention for Palm in the graduate category.

MIE Assistant Professor Yoseob Yoon’s research on “Terahertz Phonon Engineering With van der Waals Heterostructures” was published in Nature. He has discovered a way to create atomically thin transducers that could one day enable quantum computing at room temperature.
